Markup vs margin calculator

Turn a cost and a price into markup and margin, or find the price that gives the margin you want. Shows the gross profit on each unit too.

What do you know?

How it works

Markup is the price minus the cost, divided by the cost, times 100.

Margin is the price minus the cost, divided by the price, times 100.

To price for a target margin, the price is the cost divided by one minus the margin as a fraction. A 40% margin on a $30 cost is $30 divided by 0.6, $50.

The two are easy to mix up because they share a top line and differ only in what they divide by: a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin.
