What it looks like

Cover of Product Pricing and Profit Margin Calculator, Google Sheets and Excel
The Pricing sheet: five sample products down the left with their unit cost and chosen reference channel, then five calculated prices for each one, the price for the target margin before channel fees beside the price for the same margin after them, a break even price, a suggested retail price and a wholesale price.
The Channel Comparison sheet: every product tested against all five channels side by side, five columns each for price, fees, amount received, profit per unit and margin, with the best profit on each row shaded green and any channel that loses money shaded red.
The Products sheet: the cost build for each product typed into pale yellow cells, materials, packaging, shipping absorbed, labor minutes and other direct cost, with labor cost and total unit cost calculated beside them, and thirty five blank rows ready for more.

What it does

What you get

  • Platform Fees - Editable percentage fee, fixed fee per order and listing fee for

Etsy, Shopify, Amazon Handmade, a wholesale or Faire style channel, and a plain card payment, with a note on where to check each platform's current rate.

  • Channel Comparison - For every sample product, the price, the fees taken, the

amount received, the unit cost, the profit per unit and the margin per unit, side by side across all five channels.

  • Start Here - The colors used in the file, the Google Sheets import, and the

license.

  • Setup - Your business name, a currency label, your labor rate per hour, a default

target margin, and a wholesale discount off retail. Three entries the rest of the workbook reads.

  • Products - Materials, packaging, shipping you absorb, labor minutes, and any other

direct cost per product, with labor cost and unit cost calculated.

  • Pricing - For each product: the price that hits your target margin as a plain

markup on cost, the price that hits it AFTER the channel's fees, the break even price on its reference channel, a suggested retail price and a wholesale price. The two target margin columns are different numbers on any channel that charges fees, and the second is the one to price from.

You type your own costs in, or copy them in from an invoice or a receipt. Every total is a formula, built from functions that behave the same way in Excel 2016 and later and in Google Sheets. Not one total in the file is typed in.

Who it is for

A maker, a handmade seller, or a small product business pricing what it sells, on Etsy, on Shopify, at wholesale, or across more than one of them at once. It suits an operation with a handful of products up to several dozen. It is not built for a business pricing services by the hour, or one running a full inventory and purchasing system. If either of those is you, this is the wrong file.

What it is not

This is not accounting software and it does not connect to Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, a bank, or a payment processor. It does not look up a platform's fees for you: the percentage fee, fixed fee and listing fee on the Platform Fees sheet are sample rates you confirm and correct yourself, and the sheet says so. It never recommends a price. It shows what the prices it calculates would leave after your costs and a channel's fees, for numbers you type in. It calculates no tax and gives no tax, legal or business advice.
